My husband has always worked away during the week. It has never, therefore, been possible for me to take up any kind of hobby which would involve leaving the house on a weeknight without my children. Now though, he has a new job and so I joined a book club! (Edited to add: I never made it to a meeting – turns out anything after 4pm in winter is a no go for this pyjama fan!) The first book we read was Caitlin Moran’s How to be a Woman.
I was ridiculously excited about my new found freedom and couldn’t wait to get the book the group had chosen. I ordered it from Amazon, and sat down with it at the earliest opportunity.
How to be a Woman, Caitlin Moran
How to be a Woman is advertised as ‘The funniest book of the year’ on the cover, so I was really looking forward to a bit of a laugh when I started.
I very quickly realised though, to my dismay, that I didn’t like it. Not very much at all. The prologue was okay, and during the first chapter I did laugh once or twice, but from there I really struggled with it. I found the language to be just too crude for me and I think that spoiled the rest of my experience. I am a bit of a prude and I like feel good books so this isn’t one I would ever have chosen for myself anyway. There seem to be lots of sections of ranting, which is mentioned within the blurb, but some of it I had to re-read to follow properly.
I actually didn’t even finish this book. I hate to leave a book unfinished, but I just can’t get into How to be a Woman. Have you ever read a book you just couldn’t finish? I feel guilty for not reading it all! I will probably try to go back to it another time. For now though, it’s back on the bookshelf.

Ah, such a shame you didn’t like it. I really loved it but I’ve been a fan of Caitlin’s since I used to read her in Melody Maker back in my teens.
